Ripe red and black cherries emerge with turned earth and notes of thyme and sage. The wine shows beautiful purple flowers and a dusty minerality, while hints of cranberry and pomegranate balance the opulence.
The beautiful growing season gave us unbelievable fruit that required relatively little sorting. Fully destemmed before fermentation, the wine saw a few days of extended maceration before being pressed into neutral puncheons where it spent 24 months slowly developing. After bottling, a TINY amount of the wine was released to the market in 2016, but the majority has been quietly aging in our cellar.
Christopher’s Journal: A blockbuster year! Warm and drier than average from beginning to end, this vintage was harvested under ideal conditions 2-3 weeks early. Ripe, almost exotic wines were produced from this good clean fruit.
Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir may be one of the worlds most challenging of grapes to grow and produce, but when you get it right, it also makes some of the worlds most gorgeous wines. It is sensitive in the vineyard, struggles through the winter, is prone to disease, and challenges a grower’s skills like none other. In the winery, it is sensitive to manipulation, shows every mistake, and is easily overshadowed by oak or winemaking influence. But when it’s great, it is great. We believe that despite the challenges, the Finger Lakes has the ability to make great examples of Pinot.
